How to Prepare a Truck Camper for a Long Trip (Our Exact Prep Routine)

I love planning a trip.
Like… love it.

But when it comes to figuring out how to prepare a truck camper for a long trip, I’ve learned (usually the hard way) that a little prep goes a long way.

Give me a destination, a timeline, and a reason to open a fresh Notes app list, and I’m thriving. I will make that list 12 different times until it feels just right… and then I’ll probably rewrite it one more time for emotional support.

This summer, we’re heading to Montana and Wyoming for three weeks, and I am so excited I can hardly stand it. Mountains, cooler weather, wide open spaces… it’s everything I want out of a trip.

But.

We’re also going to be about 1,500 miles away from home.

Which means if something goes wrong… it’s not a quick “we’ll just deal with it later” situation.

It’s a “cool, guess we live here now” situation.

So before any big trip like this, we go through a full camper prep routine to make sure we’ve handled as many preventable problems as possible.

Before we get into it—if you’re like me and will absolutely forget something important the second you pull out of the driveway, I made a simple truck camper planning system that we use to plan every big trip.

How to Prepare a Truck Camper for a Long Trip

Before any big trip, this is exactly how we prepare our truck camper to avoid as many preventable issues as possible.

If you’re wondering how to prepare a truck camper for a long trip without forgetting something important, this is the exact routine we follow every time.

Start with the Outside: Roof + Seals (aka My Biggest Fear)

If you take nothing else from this post, take this:

Water damage is the enemy.

It is sneaky. It is expensive. And it will ruin your trip and your camper if you ignore it long enough.

Also—I’m not being dramatic when I say I have had actual nightmares about water getting into the camper.

Like full-on, wake-up-and-check-the-ceiling nightmares.

So before a big trip, we always do a full exterior check.

What we do:

Every seam. Every edge. Every place water could even think about getting in.

Is it the most glamorous pre-trip task? No.

Does it matter more than basically anything else? Yes.

Because once water gets in, you’re not just dealing with a quick fix. You’re dealing with rot, mold, structural issues… all the things that make you question your life choices.

So we handle it before we leave.

Not after.

Not “if we notice something.”

Before.

If you’re newer to this or not sure what’s actually worth doing, I shared more of the upgrades that made a big difference for us in Simple Truck Camper Upgrades That Made a Big Difference.

Sanitize the Fresh Water Tank (Because… No)

We don’t drink directly from our camper water.

We use this filtered pitcher for drinking water because I simply do not trust mystery hose water from a random campground in the middle of nowhere.

However…

I still want clean water for:

Because the thought of not doing that makes me uncomfortable on a deep level.

So right before a long trip, we sanitize the fresh water tank.

Here’s exactly how we do it:

This is one of those things that’s easy to skip, but when you’re learning how to prepare a truck camper for a long trip, it makes a big difference.

It’s simple, it’s effective, and it gives me peace of mind that we’re not starting a three-week trip with questionable water.

Also, pro tip:
The first time you smell bleach coming through the faucet, it’s a little alarming.

Like… “have I made a terrible mistake?” energy.

You didn’t. You’re doing it right. Just trust the process.

This is one of those things no one really talks about until you run into issues—which is exactly why I wrote What No One Tells You About Owning a Truck Camper.

At this point, you can probably see why I like having a checklist for this.

Because none of this is hard… but it’s really easy to forget one small thing that turns into a big problem later.

Truck Maintenance (Chris’s Department 🫡)

This is where I lovingly pass responsibility over to Chris.

Because while I will happily reorganize the camper 47 times, I am not the one in charge of vehicle maintenance.

And honestly… that’s for the best.

Normally, we stay on top of maintenance throughout the year.

But for a long trip like this—especially one that’s 1,500 miles away—we like to do a full check ahead of time.

What we do before a big trip:

Basically, we want a professional to look at it and say,
“Yep, you should make it there and back without any major drama.”

Because breaking down close to home is annoying.

Breaking down halfway to Montana with a truck camper on the back?

That’s a personality test I am not interested in taking.

This all ties into how we plan our trips in general, which I break down more in How We Plan Our Trips.

Inside the Camper: My Time to Shine

Now this… this is where I thrive.

Prepping the inside of the camper is fully my domain, and I take it very seriously.

Because starting a trip in a messy camper?

Immediate chaos.

Starting a trip in a clean, organized camper?

We are calm. We are thriving. We are the kind of people who definitely have their lives together.

(At least for the first 24 hours.)

Step 1: Deep Clean Everything

Before a big trip, I do a full deep clean.

Basically, I want it to feel like a fresh start.

Because nothing ruins the excitement of leaving for a trip faster than realizing your camper is kind of… gross.

If you camp with dogs like we do, keeping things clean is a whole different level—this is exactly what works for us in Keeping a Truck Camper Clean with Dogs (What Actually Works).

Step 2: Reset + Organize

Once everything is clean, I go through and reset the entire camper.

This means:

Because when you’re living in a tiny space for three weeks, function matters just as much as aesthetics.

Actually… more.

If I have to dig through three bins just to find a spatula, I will lose my mind by day two.

Most of this comes down to having the right things in the camper in the first place, which I go into more in Truck Camper Essentials (What We Actually Use Every Trip).

Step 3: Remove Anything We Don’t Need

This might be my favorite step.

I take everything out that we don’t need.

Extra stuff = clutter
Clutter = frustration
Frustration = me dramatically reorganizing the camper mid-trip

And we’re trying to avoid that.

So I go through and ask:

If it doesn’t serve a purpose, it stays home.

Why This Routine Matters (More Than You Think)

Could we skip some of this?

Probably.

Would we regret it?

Also probably.

Because the goal of all this prep isn’t perfection.

It’s peace of mind.

It’s knowing that:

So when something does go wrong (because let’s be honest… something always does), it’s not because we skipped something preventable.

It’s just part of the adventure.

Final Thoughts (From Someone Who Loves a Good List)

Prepping for a big trip might not be the most exciting part…

…but it’s what makes the actual trip so much better.

Because instead of worrying about what might go wrong, you get to focus on:

Also… let’s be real.

There is something deeply satisfying about leaving for a trip knowing you’ve done everything you can to be prepared.

Will I still bring way too many snacks?

Yes.

Will I still rewrite my packing list one more time before we leave?

Also yes.

But at the end of the day, learning how to prepare a truck camper for a long trip isn’t about doing everything perfectly—it’s about setting yourself up for a smoother, less stressful adventure.

And honestly…

That’s growth.
